Pleasant Suprise – I was suprised by the negative reviews shown for this restaurant as my experience was completely different. Then I noticed that they are in fact not reviews for La Vigna but for Ottavio's the previous tenant at this location (error by City Search?)
I tried this restaurant after seeing the readers polls in the Daily Herald (Best new restaurant) and I was not dissapointed, the foccacia was warm from the oven and crusted with herbs and cheese, wonderful. I had the Carni Sorento, fork tender steak medallions over linguini in a sherry and mushroom cream sauce I couldn't put my fork down. My date had the Ravioli Amalfi, crab stuffed ravioli (real crab not some pasty stuff!) with sauteed shrimp in a lobster bisque.
For dessert we ordered the warm carmel apple crepe, they stuff the crepe with moscarpone cheese and sauteed apples (johnathon or granny smith maybe?) then top it with caramel sauce and whipped cream, We are coming back just for that.
Our server Matt was one of the best, please, thank you, and may I? seem to be forgotten today and to hear them from a waiter was a pleasant suprise.
Slow-slow service. – Food is so-so, nothing special. Mundane presentation. Service was terrible. All empty glasses left on the table when refills were served. We were there early, before the busy dinner crowd, and it took over 2 hours for the meal. Desserts took over 25 minutes to be served and they are pre-made. Definitely will not go back or recommend to anyone.
Pretty weak food especially for the price, nothing special here – As far as Italian food goes, Ottavios is only OK. Everything seems pretty mundane and pre-fabricated. Our Chicken Marsala was a boiled piece of chicken with marsala sauce poured over it, for example. The desserts have all been bland with a distinct "store-bought" flavor, never fresh-tasting and obviously not made on-site. The creme brullee was even ice cold when we got it! For ~$14 a plate, this place is NOT worth the money.
The service has been so-so. On one visit our waitress was polite and nice, but not out-of-her way fantastic. On another our waiter was so downright awful we wouldn't have left him a tip if he didn't include gratuity on the check. :( He was slow, never refilled drinks and rude to our children.
All in all, Ottavios is not high on my list of good establishments and we'll probably never go back.
